Rob, Lies of Locke Lamora is exactly your kind of book. It's about a crew of con men in a low-fantasy version of renaissance Venice.

Name of the Wind is also pretty solid, nothing new in terms of the fantasy genre, but very well executed.

Not for nothing, but the new Wheel of Time book was co-written by Brandon Sanderson because Robert Jordan died, not because he wanted to hand it over to someone else.
